... and make the effort to learn something new everyday

Life of Brian: HI! My name is Brian and I am a student at the University of Sussex in England. Have I told you this already? I am sure I have, I tend to repeat myself! Anyway, this website covers the three broad categories that I think are of most use to the discerning web surfer: health, society and education.

Using the navigation to the right find your way around the site. Or go straight to one of my most recent featured sites on the main page.

Back to me: I am studying Biochemistry and this is my favourite molecule:

haemoglobin - a lovely example of alpha helices

Do you know what it is?
It's composed of four alpha helices, each with a heme moiety in the centre, and a high affinity for oxygen. Its haemoglobin and it transports oxygen from the lungs to muscles, in other words, it ROCKS!
This area of biochemistry is of great interest to me and it's what I plan to study post graduation. Alpha helices are secondary structures present in many exciting proteins, the most interesting aspect to alpha helices is their ability to form anti-parallel coiled coils. Read more about it here at The Protein Design Group at Sussex.
If you want to read more about biochemistry, then Molecules at an Exhibition by John Emsley could be a useful primer. Its an easy book to dip into with lots of great examinations into everyday things and their chemical wonders. If that gets your lipids wet, then also try Biochemisty by Lubert Stryer, a comprehensive and well illustrated text book.
